Holistic Support for People affected by Cancer (HSPC)

Kampung Senang, a charity founded in 1999 to promote holistic health and education in our community, is concerned with the escalation of the number of cancer affected people. Since the small group of friends had sowed the seed in 1992, we continued to bring love and hope to cancer patients and survivors through home visits. In 2002, using "Kampung Spirit" or "Gotong-Royong" as the base, we extended our outreach further through the Gift of Good Food Scheme (GGFS), under which we delivered organic vegetables and other food to cancer patient families on a weekly basis. Undoubtedly, the spiraling need for cancer patient support makes us worried. Although our resources are limited and our volunteer base is small, we believe that families and volunteers must reach out to one another, as should members of the community at large. The feeling of fear and loss of hope of the people affected must be dealt with positively before they take control of the lives of the patients and overwhelm their families.

Today, the initiative has evolved into Holistic Support for People affected by Cancer(HSPC). As one of the key projects of Kampung Senang, HSPC is dedicated to providing wellness support to cancer patients, survivors and families to help improve their total well being. Under this project, we deliver organic food, make home visits, share dietary information and experiences of cancer recovery with people, provide counseling services, organise support group gatherings, and facilitate wellness programmes such as relaxation and visualization, expressive workshop, Qigong, gentle Yoga, and other complementary options that can help people to recover better in the face of cancer and enhance holistically their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. There are people who had been given only a few months to live, but are miraculously still with us today. There are also people who had once succumbed to fear and lost the will to go on, but recouped and made a successful recovery, and are living well today. Their success is largely attributed to altering fundamentally their lifestyle, positive thinking, practicing kindness towards self and others, and complementing medical treatments with proper diet and combinations of wellness choices that maximize their total well-being.

Gift of Good Food Delivery

Gift of Good Food Scheme (GGFS) is an outreach to cancer patients and survivors. Our volunteers deliver organic vegetables and other food to registered members island-wide on weekly basis, encouraging and supporting them to change to contaminant-free, healthy diet. Sponsorship for organic vegetables is available for families that need financial assistance.

Organic Farm Tour and Know Your Goodie Pack Workshop with Food Demonstration

It is highly recommended that HSPC members who are under the Gift of Good Food Scheme should attend the Organic Farm Tour and Know Your Goodie Pack Workshop. The Organic Farm Tour is very educational and gives a good appreciation of locally grown organic vegetables and how these contaminant-free produce can help restore our health. The Know Your Goodie Pack Workshop can either be combined with the tour, or organized separately at our centre. It explains the variety of organic vegetables that members normally receive and their proper usage for both healthy and anticancer diets. Depending on the availability of manpower, we aim to organize the tour and workshop at least once in three months.

Home Visits

Caring volunteers make weekly home visits to cancer patients and survivors, who are in diversified home situations, with the goal of understanding their needs and experiences in the course of their recovery, providing them with warm support, and sharing with them our services and useful wellness information.

Holistic Support Gatherings

Our holistic support gatherings provide an excellent opportunity for cancer patients, survivors, families, and volunteers to share and learn with one another. Currently we run a regular monthly gathering with multiple highlights including open sharing, private support with attention by peers, preparation and tasting of organic healthy food, healing touch, well-wishing, and outdoor therapeutic exercise. HSPC members also have the choice of attending smaller, more specialized gatherings conducted by experienced facilitators, such as “Making Your Own Wellness Programme? available presently on a non-regular basis.

Counseling is often an important part of the recovery process, especially for those who are under mental and emotional stresses, or are having difficulty coping with various life issues. Cancer patients, survivors and their families are welcome to take advantage of the expertise of trained counselors who operate weekly sessions at our centre on an appointment basis only.

Weekend Mart Organic Food

Organic vegetables, fruits, beverage and groceries are available for sale at discounts for all HSPC members at our centre on every Saturday.

Diet and Detoxification Sharing

It sounds like a simple question: Can what we eat influence our risk of cancer? The answer is yes, but how? Can cancer patients and survivors eat anything they like? If diet is an important contributing factor for cancer (a fact widely accepted by researchers and doctors), it will be unwise for a cancer stricken person, fighting very hard to regain health, not to alter an unhealthy or even cancer prone diet. Detoxification is the process of either clearing toxins from the body or neutralizing or transforming them, and hence clearing excess mucus and congestion. Detoxification involves dietary and lifestyle changes that reduce the intake of toxins while improving elimination. Weekly sharing sessions on diet and detoxification are available at our centre, where people with cancers, their families, and those who practice healthy diet can mutually share their knowledge and experiences, with the presence of an experienced facilitator.

Free Medical Care

We are licensed by the Ministry of Health to operate a free medical clinic, with the help of qualified western doctors, providing consultation, medical advice and medication. In the area of TCM, we have experienced Chinese doctors offering free consultation and treatments such as acupuncture and Chinese medication. Both western and Chinese medical services are available to members of the community including cancer patients on a weekly basis. The western medical service requires appointments prior to visiting the doctor at our centre.

Visualization with Music

The use of imagery, or visualization, aims to focus the mind to enhance body functions and processes. Therapy through music that relieves our stress and tensions ?listening to a CD, attending a concert, singing alone or in a group, or playing an instrument, ?can have a good healing effect. We use music as a technique to aid visualization. Monthly visualization sessions are available at our centre.

Expressive Workshop

Expressive Workshop offers an opportunity of expressing our feelings and accessing our concerns through art, music and movement, and theme sharing in a relaxed, supportive and safe environment. Through this workshop, we hope to stimulate our relationships, and learn the language of love. In the company of others, we learn to express our reactions, enhance self awareness, lessen our feeling of isolation, respond positively to life challenges, facilitate changes and live our lives with compassionate love for others. Monthly expressive workshops are available at our centre.

Qigong is a form of mind-body method where slow and deliberate movements of the body are integrated with breathing to encourage the appropriate flow of "chi," or body energy, in the body. Through slow, deliberate, and deep breathing, along with specific movements, chi is enabled to flow more freely through the body. Daily Qigong practice is available at out Centre.

Healing Touch

Healing Touch is a holistic energy therapy that emphasizes compassionate, caring love in which the healing touch provider and client are equal partners in facilitating health and healing. Healing Touch providers use gentle touch to influence and support the human energy system within and surrounding the body with the goal of restoring harmony, energy and balance within the human energy system. Monthly healing touch sessions are available at our centre.

Gentle Yoga

Yoga is another form of mind-body method that originated in India thousands of years ago. It involves gentle stretching, physical postures, specific movements, and meditations in an effort to promote balance, optimum health, and decrease stress and anxiety. The gentle yoga programme is subject to the availability of the instructor and a minimum class size.

Cancer Q & A

Cancer Q & A is an interactive talk conducted by a medical doctor for cancer patients, survivors, their families and volunteers. It covers common questions that people may ask about cancer, such as the challenges of different cancers, various tests, screening procedures, treatments and side effects. Depending on the availability of the doctor, we aim to organize the talk twice a year.

Meeting Clinic

Meeting Clinic is a special function run by a medical doctor. During the gathering, cancer patients, survivors and their families learn more about the disease, clarify doubts regarding their conditions, and share ideas and information about their diets. Facilitated by a caring doctor, people can share things that can improve their conditions and give each other encouragement, knowing that they are not the only ones suffering from the disease. Depending on the availability of the doctor, we aim to organize the function twice a year.

All cancer patients and survivors can become HSPC members. Some of our services such as GGFS Delivery and Home Visits are available for HSPC members only. While many of our services are provided free, members enjoy discounts on all chargeable services and prices of the organic goods sold at our Weekend Mart. To apply for membership, please contact us at 67852568. You can download a HSPC Membership Application Form from our website: http://www.kg-senang.org.sg or contact the project coordinator to receive one by fax or mail.
