Mastectomy - Positive Thoughts

Very often, I received email messages from patients expressing sadness over the loss of their breasts. Sadly, mastectomy is necessary in some cases. I would like to share two cancer survivors' experiences which I read about in a book, "Cancer has its privileges", as extracted below.

One patient wrote on the post-it note attached to the breast that was to be removed : "Dear Doctor, before you begin cutting, please thank this breast for all it's done for me. It sacrificed itself by containing the cancer and keeping it away from the rest of my body. Be grateful along with me."

Another patient wrote: "When told I would have to have a bilateral mastectomy upon receiving a diagnosis of cancer, my husband hugged me and said, 'When we hug our hearts will be closer.'"

Footnote:
Please note that Breast Cancer Foundation's Positive Appearance Room displays and sells an array of prostheses, bras, swimsuits, and wigs to help breast cancer patients regain or enhance their self-confidence after surgery and during treatment.
